Replacing a flame detector on a Siemens Energy SGT-800

Simon Sumrak · MEK Group · Sioux Falls

Industrial control room at night

On a gas turbine the flame detector is a safety device. If it fails, you do not “see how it runs.” You stop, replace, prove the new unit, and only then return the machine to the control system.

The work

A typical replacement is short to describe and easy to rush. We do not rush it.

  • Remove the failed detector
  • Install the new unit to the mechanical and cable spec
  • Inspect connections and cabling before you ask the turbine to light
  • Functional test and flame-detection verification
  • Hand the machine back in a documented state

What this is not

This is not a product review of Siemens Energy equipment. It is field practice from power-generation I&C — including SGT-800 work at Termoelektrarna Brestanica — applied to plants that need the same standard in the Upper Midwest.
